The Good Start Challenge: Latin America

We are looking for teams that can advance innovative solutions to improve the wellbeing of parents and other caregivers of young children (aged 0-6) in disadvantaged circumstances in Brazil, Colombia and/or Mexico.

We are interested in supporting the following:

  • Single parents
  • Adolescent parents
  • Parents affected by displacement and migration
  • Parents in financially vulnerable situations

Solutions are encouraged to have a focus on traditional communities, including Indigenous and Quilombolas, and other Afro-communities.

Why focus on traditional communities?

Indigenous peoples, Quilombolas, and Afro-descendant communities are central to the cultural landscape of Latin America but have long faced deep-rooted inequalities that impact every aspect of their lives. Centuries of displacement, land dispossession, and systemic racism have left these communities with limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities—pushing many to the margins of society.

Women from these communities face disproportionately high levels of violence, while legal systems often fail to protect them. Structural racism in healthcare leads to higher maternal mortality rates, poor access to prenatal care, and discrimination in medical settings. In the workforce, Afro-descendant and Indigenous women are overrepresented in low-wage, unregulated jobs, such as domestic work, with little to no social protection.

Despite these systemic injustices and daily hardships, parents from Indigenous and Afro-descendent communities work tirelessly to care for their families, uphold community networks, and drive grassroots change. That’s why it’s critical to actively support parents from these groups. By focusing on solutions that centre their needs and experiences, we can create opportunities for a future where these caregivers have the resources, support and recognition they deserve.
