The Good Start Challenge: Sub-Saharan Africa

We are looking for teams that can advance innovative solutions to improve the wellbeing of parents and other caregivers of young children (aged 0-6) in disadvantaged circumstances in Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and/or Uganda.

Solutions must have a focus on communities impacted by forced movement including one or more of the following:

  • Internally displaced
  • Refugees
  • Host communities
  • Those at risk of displacement

Within these communities, we welcome solutions that support the following:

  • Single parents
  • Adolescent parents
  • Parents in financially vulnerable situations

Why focus on parents and caregivers impacted by forced movement?

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of parents and caregivers are living in displacement. In Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Senegal alone, there are over 3.5 million refugees and 3.8 million internally displaced people (Sources: Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, UNHCR). These displacements are driven by a combination of conflict, political instability, and increasingly, climate-related crises such as droughts and floods. Many more are at risk of becoming displaced due to conflict, climate change, or persecution.

When caregivers are forcibly displaced they face immense stress and are often unable to meet even basic needs. Caring for toddlers and infants in conflict and crisis-affected settings becomes exponentially harder. In these circumstances, parents are managing their childrenʼs survival, emotional stability and development – all while enduring uncertainty, danger, and the loss of support systems.

Raising a child becomes even more difficult under these circumstances. That’s why it is vital to support caregivers both impacted by and at risk of forced movement, enabling them to have the resources, protection, and community they need.
